Rachel Weisz: 'I Thought Darren Aronofsky Would Be Weird'

British actress Rachel Weisz expected her filmmaker fiance Darren Aronofsky to be "intense and weird", but she was thrilled to discover he's not as dark and brooding as his movies. The Constant Gardener star admires Aronofsky's talent for making deep, depressing movies like Requiem For A Dream and Pi while maintaining a lighter, more fun-loving attitude towards everyday life. She reveals, "I guess the first impression was that I'd been a big admirer of his work, and then I met someone who you'd never have put with that work. There was something very refreshing about that. I thought I was going to meet someone who was very intense and weird." (c) WENN

Rachel Weisz moves back and forth in time...

Rachel Weisz is having a whirlwind year. She won a best supporting actress Oscar in March for The Constant Gardener, gave birth two months later to her first child, Henry, and completed two films this year. Now, the British beauty stars in The Fountain, a romantic sci-fi drama written and directed by her fiance, Darren Aronofsky. "I couldn't be happier," says Weisz, elegant in a dark blue dress. The Fountain is an odyssey about one man's struggle to save the woman he loves. Weisz and Hugh Jackman play three different roles in three different eras in a love story that spans a millennium. The journey begins in 16th century Spain, where conquistador Tomas (Jackman) embarks on a search for the legendary Fountain of Youth. Weisz plays Queen Isabel, who sends Tomas on his dangerous mission to the New World. As present-day scientist Tommy Creo, Jackman seeks to find a cure for his cancer-stricken wife, Izzi (Weisz). She is coming to terms with her fate and implores him to finish a novel she is writing. The third storyline involves a 26th-century astronaut (Jackman) who is just starting to grasp the mysteries of life. Weisz plays a ghostly figure accompanying him on his journey to a distant star. Ironically, Aronofsky didn't immediately think of Weisz when he was casting the film.He says he was hesitant to mix his professional and personal life For her part, Weisz says, "I really wanted to do it, but I didn't bring it up because I didn't think it was right to do". Ultimately, Jackman recommended Weisz for the role. The trio met over lunch at a New York restaurant. After observing Weisz and Jackman together, Aronofsky recalls: "They just completely connected." So he decided the benefits of having Weisz in his film outweighed the risks of complicating their offscreen relationship. Production started in late 2004 and wrapped in early 2005. At that point Jackman had come into his own as a leading man in action films like the X-Men movies but hadn't had a chance to show off his dramatic chops. "The thing about Hugh and Rachel is that they were both extremely hungry at the time - now they're stars," said Aronofsky. "They're stage actors and incredibly well-trained. But they hadn't been given the opportunity to show what they could do." He describes Weisz as a cauldron of emotions - "You turn up the heat and things start boiling over," he says. "You can get four or five different emotions from one take. That's amazing." Weisz had wanted to work with Aronofsky since seeing his groundbreaking films Pi and Requiem for a Dream.
