Penelope CruzPenelope Cruz And Salma Hayek Are Not Lesbian LoversPENELOPE CRUZ has laughed off reports she is having a gay relationship with best pal SALMA HAYEK. The two have been close friends for the past six years and Hayek posed for a series of pictures for Cruz which were recently published in Interview magazine in the US. The pair also posed together for one provocative shot showing Cruz grabbing Hayek's backside, which fuelled rumours that the two were romantically involved. The VANILLA SKY star appeared on LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN on Tuesday night (09JAN07), where she defended the photo when the host showed it to the audience. She explained, "You know what they've been saying because of that picture? We are like sisters and we have some sense of humour... "We did that in front of 100 photographers and the story now is that apparently we are lovers. I'm sorry to say, that is not the case!" Penelope Cruz: I'm not a lesbianPenelope Cruz has dismissed rumours that she's having a gay relationship with Salma Hayek as 'rubbish.' The star was pictured in a recent photo shoot for a US magazine grabbing actress Salma Hayek's bottom, sparking rumours that the pair - who've been friends for six years - were having an affair. But the 32-year-old laughed off the rumours on The Late Show with David Letterman, saying: 'We did that in front of 100 photographers and the story now is that apparently we are lovers. I'm sorry to say, that is not the case!' Sitting down for a mostly open chat with actress Penelope CruzPHILOSOPHERS say the best thing about celebrities is that their misbehavior distracts us from more pressing matters," writes Ken Barnes. Well, in the middle of last year's holidays I met a "celebrity" who isn't known for misbehavior. This gorgeous woman managed to have two huge public romances with major American male stars - Tom Cruise and Matthew McConaughey - without making too many waves. And when she and they said bye-bye, well, the breakups also happened with a maximum of dignity and no horrid true confessions. We tabloid fans never knew much about what these guys and Penelope Cruz felt. And she refuses to talk about her former lovers. So who is this paragon of virtue, high ambition and professional intent? Penelope glided into the nearly deserted St. Regis Hotel dining room on a December afternoon and we sat down to chat about her performance in Volver - another of those Pedro Almodovar classics that has her up for Oscar consideration. Free speech In spite of her refusal to discuss romantic liaisons, Ms. Cruz is not guarded. She is upfront and appealingly human, but I was expecting a kind of Sophia Loren-Anna Magnani character because, especially in Volver, this is how she comes off. In this film she is a harried woman handling a crisis -manslaughter, molestation, secret burials, family members returning from the great beyond, and a happy ending to boot. It is Almodovar at the peak of his form and Ms. Cruz assaying his obsession with the women of his native Spain. Penelope is petite, looking younger than her 32 years. It hardly seems possible that she is the mature soul on screen, the take-charge hot mama with excellent intentions and determination to improve the lot of everyone. Volver means to return and it's about going back to one's roots, to one's home village, to a culture where women obsessively clean, dust and polish the gravestones of the departed. (Penelope: "I love the traditions of the villages!") I embraced the women in this film. Penelope: "Pedro never judges his women! They deserve him." Inspiration "When I was 13, I saw one of Pedro's films Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! I became obsessed. I was studying classical ballet and, though my family didn't have a lot of money, my father brought home a Betamax machine. We watched movies. This was the beginning of a dream for me. Pedro called me when I was 17 and so nervous, but he inspired me. Now I have done 35 films and I have had other fine directors who gave me many opportunities. Good ones are unique." Do you hide your private emotions, I asked? "No! I am not good at hiding in life. I think all of us want to be happy. Today, I am happy because I ran into two of my favorite most admired actors - Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange." How does she live? "I am either in L.A. or in Madrid or in the villages, wherever my family is. I have my dogs in Spain and my cats in L.A. They don't get along. I have created my own rhythm. I am not attached to Hollywood. I am there one month, then I leave." The Oscar? "Oh, don't even mention that!" she laughs. "My hope someday is to do a musical, like Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge. She was so great. I could use all my dancing." Penelope Cruz Is Not GayPenelope Cruz is not gay! She laughed off reports that she's having a relationship with best pal Salma Hayek. The two have been BFF's for 6 years and photos had surfaced recently that suggested that they were perhaps more than just friends. One example is the picture of them on the red carpet where Cruz is pinching Hayek's ass. Hey, they make a HOT couple! The Spanish beauty was on ”Late Show with David Letterman” where she explained, "You know what they've been saying because of that picture? We are like sisters and we have some sense of humor..."We did that in front of 100 photographers and the story now is that apparently we are lovers. I'm sorry to say, that is not the case!"
