January 26: Nicole Kidman attacked by ghouls, crashes car

According to the Associated Press, actress Nicole Kidman was taken to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in L.A. early Thursday morning following an on-set accident on the Warner Bros. production THE INVASION. While the actress (pictured from the film) was released from the LA facility after a “walk-in and walkout visit” (according to WB publicity), Kidman’s near-miss was serious enough however to warrant a momentary pause in production. In total, seven crew members required medical exams, having sustained minor injuries in the accident. “She’s OK,” says Kidman’s publicist Catherine Olim, following the actress’ discharge. The collision reportedly took place during the filming of a scene in which Kidman’s character attempts to escape a horde of extraterrestrial ghouls who have attached themselves to the hood of her car. With Kidman at the wheel and the auto being towed by a camera rig, the “stunt driver apparently went off course,” says LAPD officer Karen Smith, and “hit a light post” on West Sixth Street traveling 45 m.p.h. at approximately 1 a.m. Smith says that a routine traffic accident investigation will be conducted, and a statement from Warner Bros. spokeswoman Jan Craft is forthcoming. Directed by Oliver (THE EXPERIMENT) Hirschbiegel from a script by Dave Kajganich (loosely based on Jack Finney’s already thrice-filmed 1955 novel THE BODY SNATCHERS), THE INVASION originally wrapped principal photography some time ago; initially scheduled for release in 2006, the movie is now slated to open August 17. The vehicular error occurred during reshoots (evidently intended to beef up the film’s action quotient), and reportedly isn’t the first that the production has had to contend with. Nicole Kidman in Car Accident; Smug Sense of Superiority Remains Intact

Nicole Kidman had a real-life scare on the set of her new horror movie, The Invasion. The actress, along with seven cast and crew members, was involved in an accident when a rig pulling the car she was pretending to drive lost control and ran into a pole on Thursday. Kidman, who was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's emergency room for evaluation and released two hours later. Warner Bros. studios confirmed two of the crew members suffered "minor injuries," reports E! News. The incident occurred when Kidman was shooting a scene in which she's "driving" a Jaguar and trying to escape from zombies that are hanging off the car's roof. The Invasion is loosely based on horror classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Nicole Kidman In Accident On Film Set

LOS ANGELES (January 25, 2007) -- Nicole Kidman was taken to a hospital just after midnight Thursday morning after becoming involved in an automobile accident on the set of her new movie "The Invasion." A Jaguar carrying the actress and several crewmembers slammed into a pole in downtown LA after the driver towing the vehicle took a turn quickly, causing Nicole's car to slide on a watered down road. Streetlights were knocked out by the impact, witnesses believe clocked in at approximately 45 MPH. A large metal trashcan was also thrown into the street as a result of the crash. Authorities confirm a non-paramedic fire crew was called out to the set at 6th Street and Broadway around 12:25AM for an on-set traffic accident. "All parties" were complaining of injuries, Police say. The crew stayed for at least 20 minutes checking out victims of the crash before leaving without taking anyone to the hospital. Kidman walked away from the scene and was taken back to her on set trailer sources say. Shortly thereafter she was taken in a SUV to nearby Cedar's Sinai Medical Center where she was treated and released two hours later. "There was an accident involving a rigged camera vehicle on the set of ‘The invasion'" Warner Brothers confirmed in a statement released today. "Nicole Kidman was in the vehicle at the time of the accident and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. She was released shortly thereafter. No other actors were involved in the scene at the time of the incident." Kidman's husband Keith Urban and son Connor Cruise are believed to have been on set at the time of the accident. Earlier reports that Kidman's co-star, ten-year-old Jackson Bond was in the car for the accident have now been discredited. He was filming earlier in the evening sources tell Access, but had left the set before the accident occurred.

REUTERS/Denis Balibouse By Dan Whitcomb LOS ANGELES, Jan 25 (Reuters Life!) - Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman and seven other people suffered minor injuries on a Los Angeles movie set on Thursday when her car crashed into a light pole during filming, police said. Kidman, who was behind the wheel of a Jaguar rigged for filming when it struck the pole, was examined at a local hospital after the incident, Los Angeles Police spokeswoman Karen Smith said. Smith said seven other people on the set of the alien thriller "The Invasion" went to local hospitals complaining of injuries after the 1 a.m. (0900 GMT) crash but that none was seriously hurt. Warner Bros. Pictures, the studio behind "The Invasion," confirmed that Kidman was taken to the hospital after the crash but said she was quickly released and would be back on set when filming resumed later on Thursday. "No other actors were involved in the scene at the time of the incident," Warner Bros. said in a written statement. "Two additional crew members sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision," Warner Bros. said. "The production took the appropriate steps following the incident to ensure the safety of cast and crew." There was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy in the number of injured listed by the police and the studio. Smith said the Los Angeles Police Department would likely conduct a routine traffic accident investigation and that a state workplace safety agency might also respond. She could not confirm a report by Us Weekly magazine that Kidman's car was being towed by a rig at about 45 miles per hour, with zombie-like characters hanging off the hood, at the time of the crash. Kidman, who was raised in Australia, won the Academy Award for best actress for her role as writer Virginia Woolf in "The Hours." The 39-year-old film star, who split from actor Tom Cruise in 2001, last year married country singer Keith Urban in Sydney, Australia. She stars opposite Daniel Craig in "The Invasion," playing a Washington, D.C., psychiatrist working to solve a mysterious epidemic.
