Nicole Kidman not injured in car crash

Movie sets can be dangerous places to work. No matter how many precautions are taken to ensure the safety of the cast and crew, there is always room for error. That is a lesson that Nicole Kidman learned the hard way while on the set of her new science-fiction thriller, The Invasion.

Nicole Kidman, 39, was in a Jaguar being towed behind a camera rig for one of the scenes in when things went wrong. The camera rig towing Kidman's vehicle lost control when rounding a corner, and the rear end of the unit slid out, sending the car over the street curb and into a light pole on West Sixth Street in downtown Los Angeles. No other actors were in the car at the time of the accident, and Nicole Kidman was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash. L.A.P.D. Officer Karen Smith was quoted by CNN as describing the accident by saying, "The stunt driver apparently went off course and hit a light post at about 1 a.m."

The crash, which occurred early Thursday morning, was captured on camera and has been circling the Internet. It shows Nicole Kidman getting out of the car slowly, then being escorted away from the set. Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident that involved Kidman and seven other people. Two crew members sustained what was described as minor injuries, according to a statement made by Warner Bros. The statement, posted by TMZ says, "Nicole Kidman was in the vehicle at the time of the accident and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. She was released shortly thereafter. No other actors were involved in the scene at the time of the incident. Two additional crew members sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision. The production took the appropriate steps following the incident to ensure the safety of the cast and crew. Production resumed Wednesday evening and Kidman will return to the set on Thursday, January 25."

According to Us Weekly, the scene being filmed features Nicole Kidman attempting to escape from a group of zombie aliens in her Jaguar that she is driving at 45 mph. Rumors had originally placed Kidman's 10-year-old co-star Jackson Bond in the car with Kidman, though those rumors were later dispelled. As well, Kidman's two children with Tom Cruise, 11-year-old Connor and 14-year-old Isabella were supposedly on set during the day, but were not around to witness their mother's unfortunate car crash accident.

The Invasion, starring the Oscar Award-winning Nicole Kidman and the new James Bond Daniel Craig, is a remake of the 1970s horror classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Kidman plays a Washington psychiatrist who is able to discover the cause of the alien epidemic and attempts to warn the world about it. The Invasion is the second project that stars both Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman, as the two have finished shooting the first film in the fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials, The Golden Compass.

The composer Steve Reich and the jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins were named the winners this week of the Polar Music Prize of $143,000 each for their contributions to music, The Associated Press reported. The Swedish Royal Academy of Music, which chooses the winners, said Reich, 70, had "transferred questions of faith, society and philosophy into a hypnotic- sounding music." The academy cited Rollins, 76, for raising "the accompanied solo to the highest artistic level — all characterized by a distinctive and powerful sound, irresistible swing and an individual sense of humor." The winners will receive their prizes from King Carl Gustav XVI in Stockholm on May 21. The award was established in 1989 by Stig Anderson, manager of Abba.

Nicole Kidman and seven other people were taken to a hospital after the Jaguar they were in crashed early Thursday during filming of the science fiction thriller "The Invasion" in Los Angeles, the police said. Kidman, 39, was examined at Cedars- Sinai Medical Center and then released a short time later. No other actors were involved in the scene at the time of the accident, Warner Bros. said in a statement. James Brown's six adult children believe the soul singer's estate was mismanaged and want the trustees removed, according to court documents. An emergency petition filed this week in Aiken County, South Carolina, also claimed that some of Brown's assets are in danger of being "lost or dissipated or stolen." The irrevocable trust, signed in 2000, is said to contain most of Brown's primary assets, including music rights and his 60-acre, or 24-hectare, Beech Island home. The trust is separate from Brown's will, which was filed last week and divided possessions among the children. Buddy Dallas, a trustee and also an attorney for Brown, said everything in the trust was handled "appropriately and properly" when the 73year-old entertainer died on Dec. 25. A court hearing was scheduled for Feb.

Actress Nicole Kidman, 7 others hurt on movie set

Kidman, 39, was examined then released two hours later, her publicist, Catherine Olim, said. "I think she's OK," Olim said, adding it was unclear if the actress went home or returned to the set to resume shooting of the Warner Bros. movie. The Jaguar was being towed by a camera rig that skidded while taking a corner at about 45 mph (72.4 kph), causing Kidman's car to hit a pole, Olim said. The actress and a young boy in the car were wearing seat belts, Olim said. It was believed the young boy was a stunt person, she said. "The stunt driver apparently went off course and hit a light post," police Officer Karen Smith said. Eight people, including Kidman, stuntmen and cameramen, were taken to hospitals for examination and were released, Smith said. The Oscar-winning actress, who stars as a Washington psychiatrist who unearths the origin of an alien epidemic, was trying to escape zombie-like characters on the hood of the Jaguar when the crash occurred, Olim said. Warner Bros. spokeswoman Jan Craft's office said a statement would be released later.
