Keira Knightley sues over anorexia claim

British actress Keira Knightley is reported to be taking legal action against the Daily Mail after the paper suggested that she lied about having an eating disorder. The newspaper published a picture of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' star in an article about the death of a teenage girl suffering from anorexia. "We wish to make clear that Ms Knightley has the deepest sympathy for the girl's family," said her attorney, Simon Smith. "However, Ms Knightley has publicly denied suggestions that she might be anorexic or have a similar eating disorder." Smith said that his client would challenge the suggestion that she was responsible for the girl's death "by setting a bad example."

Keira Knightley sues newspaper over anorexia claim

The star of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Pride & Prejudice, Keira Knightley has begun legal action against The Daily Mail after the paper published a photo of the actress with comments about her weight and in an article about a woman who had died of anorexia. The BBC reports that Knightley claims that the article implies that the actress has been in denial and been dishonest about having anorexia problems.

Knightley released a statement through her lawyers, which said that she would not only challenge claims that she's anorexic but also the paper's implication that her weight is somehow to blame for the poor girl's death by setting a bad example. She also extended her deepest sympathies to the girl's family.

The BBC reports that there has been speculation about weight problems with Keira Knightley but that the actress has always denied anorexia claims, as recently as at a press conference for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

Simon Smith, Keira Knightley's attorney released the statement, as quoted by Playfuls.com. "We wish to make clear that Ms. Knightley has the deepest sympathy for the girl's family. However, Ms. Knightley has publicly denied suggestions that she might be anorexic or have a similar eating disorder."

The 21 year-old Keira Knightley can be seen in the recent DVD release of Dead Man's Chest and will reprise her character, Elizabeth Swann, in the third installment in the franchise, At Worlds End, this summer. She will also be seen in Silk with Michael Pitt and Alfred Molina this fall and the highly anticipated adaptation of Atonement from the same director as Pride & Prejudice with James McAvoy, Brenda Blethyn, and Vanessa Redgrave.

Keira Knightley Takes Legal Action Against Newspaper

British actress Keira Knightley is taking legal action against a British newspaper, claiming an article it published suggests she has lied about having an eating disorder. The Daily Mail included a photo of the star on a beach, alongside comments describing her skinny physique, as part of an article about a girl who had died of anorexia. In a statement from her lawyers, Knightley vows to challenge the alleged implication she's in some way responsible for the girl's tragic death and the alleged suggestion she's lied about having an eating disorder.

Keira Knightley Sues Over Anorexia Claims

Actress Keira Knightley is suing a British tabloid, saying that it implied she lied about having an eating disorder. At issue is a Jan. 11 story in the Daily Mail about a teenage girl who died of anorexia. It was illustrated with a shot of Knightley on a beach in a bikini. The Pirates of the Caribbean actress, 21, has "publicly denied suggestions that she might be anorexic or have a similar eating disorder," her lawyer, Simon Smith, said in a statement. He said that any legal action will reiterate that denial. Knightley will "argue that the Mail's article suggests that she has dishonestly sought to mislead the public about whether she has anorexia or similar eating disorder and will show that she does not have anorexia." Last summer, at the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest London premiere, Knightley emphatically denied that she suffers from anorexia. "I don't have it. I'm very sure I don't have it," she said. She continued: "I've got a lot of experience with anorexia. It was in my family hugely. My grandmother and my great grandmother suffered from it. And I've got a lot of friends at school who suffered from it. So I don't think it's anything to be taken lightly." If the case is not settled, it could go to court in London later this year. Associated Newspapers, the publishers of the Daily Mail, did not have a comment Tuesday.

Keira Knightley sues over 'anorexia' story

KEIRA Knightley launched a libel action yesterday over a newspaper story she claims suggested she has "dishonestly sought to mislead the public" about whether she has an eating disorder. Lawyers for the 21-year-old actress announced that the proceedings concern an article published in the Daily Mail on 11 January. Simon Smith, of the law firm Schillings, said the article "carried a photograph of Ms Knightley, taken without her consent, whilst wearing a bikini and relaxing on a beach on holiday".

He said: "The article made reference to what it perceived to be Ms Knightley's very slim appearance. The article then reported the recent, tragic death of a teenage girl who suffered from anorexia and contained an interview with the girl's mother. "We wish to make clear that Ms Knightley has the deepest sympathy for the girl's family." Mr Smith said: "However, Ms Knightley has publicly denied suggestions that she might be anorexic or have a similar eating disorder, including, in a prominent way, at a well- publicised press conference to mark the European premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean 2, in London last summer. "Accordingly, in the proceedings, Ms Knightley will argue that the Mail's article suggests that she has dishonestly sought to mislead the public about whether she has anorexia or a similar eating disorder and will show that she does not have anorexia; and further will challenge the suggestion that she is responsible and to blame for the tragic death of the teenage girl by setting a bad example." The case against Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail, is expected to go to jury trial at London's High Court either late this year or early next year if it does not settle earlier.
