Jennifer ConnellyJennifer Connelly: 'I Chose Not To Adopt For The Sake Of My Son'Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly is desperate to adopt an African child - but fears it could unsettle her relationship with nine-year-old son Kai. The 36-year-old actress spent a lot of time at a Sierra Leone orphanage while shooting new movie Blood Diamond in the country and has discussed the idea of adopting a child with actor husband Paul Bettany. But Connelly fears the move would take its toll on Kai, who has already had to deal with his mum's separation from photographer dad David Dugan. She explains, "We absolutely considered adopting. We have a son who went through a separation of his parents and then a new stepfather and a new sibling. He's had a lot of change so of course I really have to be sensitive to him. "One of the kids I became close to was older than him. What would that mean to my family? Would my son feel displaced, all of a sudden having an older sibling who didn't speak the language and would need so much more time and attention? "These are all concerns of mine and reasons why I didn't come home with a child even though, believe me, I would call Paul at night when he was away. I'd say, 'There's this baby and I don't know what to do and I love him so much and if I leave him here he might die.' It's complicated, but we are still considering." 'The Labyrinth' star has a nine-year-old son, Kai, from her relationship with photographer David Dugan and a three-year-old son Stellan with husband Paul. Jennifer spent all her free time between filming in the orphanage and found it difficult to say goodbye to the children she befriended. She said: "Leaving them was just devastating. I've tried to stay in touch. You start to forge friendships and then you leave, and I had to ask myself was it worse to have gone and created relationships and been another person who left? Or would it have been wrong to have done nothing at all?" Jennifer Connelly & Paul Bettany May Adopt African OrphanJennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany are considering adopting an African orphan. THE STARS Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou, Jennifer Connelly, David Harewood.THE STORY Humble Sierra Leone fisherman Solomon Vandy (Hounsou) is forced to work in a diamond mine when his village is destroyed and rebels take over, turning his family into refugees. Vandy finds a massive stone which he hides before being captured by government forces. In prison he meets gun-runner and former mercenary Danny Archer (DiCaprio), who has plans for the gem, as does rebel mine boss Captain Poison (Harewood). Archer and Vandy are joined by photojournalist Maddy Brown (Connelly) and they begin a dangerous hunt for the stone that can change their lives. WHAT'S GOOD? Ed Zwick's ambitious and action-packed film has already attracted praise and condemnation from both sides of the blood diamond debate (gems also called conflict stones, smuggled out of countries at war and used to buy arms) and certainly it is a film that tries to marry politics with all-out entertainment. DiCaprio gets to reinforce his leading man credentials, playing the cynical mercenary role a la Bogart and Gable in the 1930s. He has an easy charm, now combined with a greater maturity, and manages to create a fine anti-hero engaging in a nicely sparky relationship with the ever-excellent Connelly. Hounsou, born in West Africa, is the real hero of the story as he does anything he can to get back his family. But at times his harrowing tale is subsumed by the need to Hollywood-ise the real horrors of child soldiers, brutal warlords and casual violence. Director Zwick does a fine job in combining a broad range of elements and turning them into a compulsive and thought-provoking adventure and is aided by beautiful cinematography. WHAT'S BAD? It is a difficult thing to try to set an action tale against the dreadful backdrop of an African country torn apart by violence and, while there are certainly moments when the adventure tale grips the attention, there are also times when it's uncomfortable viewing. It's a film that is perhaps trying too hard to layer on the political message. Jennifer Connelly | Jennifer Connelly 1
