Crossover words: Blige, Furtado pop up on CBS

In a not-so-subtle piece of Grammy Week cross-promotion, CBS has booked 2007 nominees Nelly
Furtado and Mary J. Blige for drama series guest appearances, according to Zap2It.com, which tracks
TV news.
On Feb. 7, Furtado will guest-star on “CSI: NY,” playing a world-class professional shoplifter who
becomes a leading suspect in the murder of a store security guard.
Furtado is up for a best pop collaboration Grammy for “Promiscuous.”
On Feb. 9, Blige will drop by “Ghost Whisperer,” playing the coach of a high-ranked high school
cheerleading team.
The R&B superstar is up for eight Grammys this year.
CBS will broadcast the 49th annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 11.
Lee meets with kids
Reclusive author Harper Lee attended a high school play based on her book, “To Kill a Mockingbird,”
then met with the Alabama students who appeared in the production.
The production brought together 60 students from nearly all-white Mountain Brook High and all-black
Fairfield High Preparatory School.
Lee, 80, was invited Wednesday as a special guest to be honored by education and arts officials. Famous
for prizing her privacy, she rarely speaks to reporters, though she does occasionally meet with students.
The author has not published another book since “Mockingbird,” which remains a best-seller even
decades after its publication in 1960.
Fox ‘liar and a cheat’
Matthew Fox, who plays heroic Dr. Jack Shephard on ABC’s castaway drama “Lost,” has a dark side.
“I’m a liar and a cheat and a thief and the ultimate manipulator. ... I tell lies every day, man,” the actor,
40, tells Men’s Journal magazine for its February issue. “And when I say I’m phenomenally
manipulative, I am.”
Fox, starring with Matthew McConaughey in “We Are Marshall,” says he “can be unapologetically
vicious” and is “absolutely an instigator.”
“I really enjoy social boozing, and what I enjoy about it is when people I know and care about say and
do things they normally wouldn’t say or do,” he tells the magazine. Fox also enjoys skinny-dipping,
something he does, he says, because he’s comfy in the nude.
Sagal, 49, mom to 3rd
It’s a girl for former “Married With Children” TV mom Katey Sagal.
The actress, 49, and her writer-producer husband Kurt Sutter, 43, welcomed their first child together
Wednesday, Sagal’s publicist Cara Tripicchio said. Daughter Esme Louise Sutter was born via a
surrogate in Los Angeles, Tripicchio said.
Sagal also has a daughter, 12, and a son, 10, from a previous marriage.
She played big-haired Peg Bundy on the hit Fox show. Sutter’s credits include the FX show “The
Shield.”
Madonna backs Rosie

Rosie O’Donnell has a powerful ally in her feud with Donald Trump: her close friend Madonna. “People are giving Rosie a hard time,” Madonna, who starred with O’Donnell in 1992’s “A League of Their Own,” said Thursday on NBC’s “Today” show. “I wish they’d stop. I don’t think it’s fair.” The pop star, 48, told “Today” co-host Meredith Vieira, “Basically, I mean, (Rosie’s) a stand-up comic. I think all stand-up comics talk about provocative things in their monologues before shows, and I think that’s a commonplace thing. “I don’t know exactly the content of what she said, but I have a feeling that if every stand-up comic was penalized for saying politically incorrect things or provocative things, I think they’d all be hung in the public square.” Swank dating again Hilary Swank, who split from actor-husband Chad Lowe a year ago, has a new man in her life. “I’m in a relationship with a great guy who’s not a public person, and I want to respect that. But yes, I am in a relationship,” the Oscar-winning actress, 32, tells In Style magazine. That guy, according to the magazine, is her agent, John Campisi. Swank and Lowe announced their separation in January 2006. “I’ve never lived alone before, ever,” Swank says. The actress received a star Monday on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “I went from living with my mom right to living with Chad. Now with my traveling a lot and not staying any place for long, I have a box filled with floating receipts, makeup I’ll never wear, random dog toys, and a stack of greeting cards I pick out for friends, which inevitably end up in some storage unit.” Happy birthday Among celebrity birthdays today: Actress Kirstie Alley is 56.
