Review: Pacha Nightclub NYC First Birthday

And what a wild night it was...

It was a clear December night with excitement in the air. From the minute we walked up to the club entrance we knew we were in for something special. We were greeted by a red carpet outside usually reserved for celebrities, but tonight it seemed everybody was privy to Pacha’s opulence. We entered under a rainbow of red & white balloons stretching across 25 feet and there was a private VIP reception in Pachita, the top-level of the club for Pacha friends, family and industry guests hosted by the Sopranos brother & sister mafiosos Jamie-Lynn Sigler & Robert Iler. A beautiful Pacha New York birthday cake decorated a table with two huge bowl of cherries flanked on each side and the Pacha dancers looked hot & sexy in matching red costumes while they entertained and danced with guests.

The interior of the club itself had never looked better with red & white balloons adorning every ceiling and swaths of red cloth and cherry-prints stretching across the banisters and circling the mezzanine. The Pacha cherries were everywhere, so you never forgot exactly where you were. There was definitely a buzz of anticipation in the air, with Pacha’s new creative director Anne-Marie Duchêne making her mark. Her creative imprint was seen throughout the club in the décor and performances and added an element of spontaneity and anything-can-happen momentum to the night. The party incorporated magnificent acrobatic dancers from Cirque du Soleil’s Zumanity, a high-flying aerialist that flew over the crowd and exhibited her contortionist prowess, and an exclusive ‘Flagging-Dance’ company synchronized their movements to Erick Morillo’s house music beats

The main event was on the dancefloor though and the swelling crowds clamored for Erick Morillo. His popularity in New York is ever-increasing and Erick really knows what the crowd wants musically and as one of the most in-demand DJs around the world, it’s always a treat to have him in hometown NYC.

At 5AM, the Pacha dancers presented the Pacha cake with candles and confetti, to Erick from across the dancefloor and the whole club erupted in an impromptu “Happy Birthday” serenade. Erick was glowing from the DJ booth as the dancers blew him kisses. Erick thanked everybody and brought back the bass and again for the umpteenth time tonight, and the dancefloor erupted in rhythm and the dancing lasted until the next afternoon.

On the success of the night and all of 2006, Erick says, "one year on and it's amazing to see my dreams of being part of a successful club have come to a reality. Pacha is now considered as the number one club in New York, with a pioneering sound system that's talked about across the world. With our fantastic, loyal crowd that make up the best clubbers in New York we celebrated our first year anniversary in great style along with VIP's from Adriana Lima to Jamie Lynn Sigler. It's great to see so much unfold across the year and to see what's been accomplished is a wonderful thing. I look forward to another successful year in 2007 and many more to follow".

It’s been a great year for Pacha New York, as the club has managed to find solid ground in the madcap world of New York City clubbing. Over the last year the foundation for excellence has been laid with DJs such as Danny Tenaglia, Jonathan Peters, Jeff Mills, Boris, Junior Vasquez, Danny Krivit, Carl Cox, Josh Wink, James Zabiela, Miguel Migs, Mark Farina, and the fact that they keep on coming back are a real testament to the vision of the club and the hard work of its staff who are striving to create a special place for nightlife.

Big things are in store for 2007 as former crobar resident Boris defects to Pacha, DJ Times’ America’s Best #1 DJ Jonathan Peters continues to reign and the return of favorites Erick Morillo, Danny Tenaglia, Junior Vasquez, Danny Howells, DJ Vibe and special events including the Paradise Garage Reunion party and the return of Body & Soul in NYC! This and so much more will continue to create a new legacy of clubbing in New York City to look forward to.

See you on the dancefloor!

Counts as a Tie, Feels Like a Win

It'll show up as a tie, but to the Valencia boys soccer team, consider it a win.
Thoroughly outplayed in the first half and down a pair to Saugus in the second half, the Vikings scored
goals in the 59th and 74th minute to walk away with a 2-2 draw at Saugus High Tuesday.
"Typically, a tie is like kissing your sister. That one was like kissing (Brazilian supermodel) Adriana
Lima," said Valencia head coach Tony Scalercio afterward.
The mood on the Saugus (8-7-3, 1-1-1) side was the opposite.
This tie was pretty close to a loss.
"Oh definitely it is," said Saugus head coach Seth Groller on if this was the most disappointed his team
had been all season. "I was telling my kids, the difference between a win and a tie is two points. That
swing is huge."
Valencia (8-5-2, 1-1-1) swung the momentum late by "over-attacking," Scalercio said.
With a one-track offensive mind, the Vikings produced their first score 19 minutes into the second half.
Valencia defenseman Ricky Drake booted a free kick near the goal that bounced off one player and into
the air.
Viking John Schreiber, in front of the net, headed it past Saugus goalkeeper Pierre Diaz, cutting Saugus'
lead to 2-1.
Before that, the game was all Saugus.
The quicker Centurions offense put Valencia on its heels early thanks to the Larry Guizar-Kyle
Ernsberger scoring combination.
In the seventh minute, Saugus' Justin Mansour raced the ball down the left side of the field and released
to his right to Guizar.
Guizar controlled it for a second with a defender in his face, then booted it with his left foot past
Valencia's Alex McIntyre for the 1-0 Centurions lead.
"We were getting the touches and everyone was getting a foot on the ball," Guizar said of the offensive
success in the first half.
Valencia defenders were giving the Saugus attack a cushion.
Ernsberger was able to take advantage in the 10th minute.
He controlled the ball on the left side and from 20 yards out, sent a hard grounder past McIntyre for a 2-
0 Centurions lead.
"We were losing everything. They were all over us," said Valencia forward Dan Palmer. "At halftime,
Tony said, 'You just got to go for it.'"
Guizar admitted his team played more defensive-minded in the second half and it was seemingly
working.
Valencia didn't have very good scoring opportunities.

Schreiber's goal just squeezed through.
The Vikings' second goal had a higher degree of difficulty.
After a corner kick from Viking Keenan Scalercio, the ball rattled around the box.
Palmer headed it off a Centurion player and the ball bounced back to him.
Near the left corner of the net, he managed to get his foot on the ball and send it into the net past Saugus
goalkeeper Joseph Mackey to tie the game 2-2.
Saugus had the next-best chance as Guizar fired in the 38th minute, but wide left.
"I feel terrible," Guizar said of the tie. "We did all that work for just one point."
The tie means Valencia and Canyon are even in league as well, further giving credence to the notion that
it's anyone's league.
In the first three days of Foothill competition, the following has happened:
Saugus beat Hart.
Valencia lost to Hart.
Canyon beat Saugus.
Golden Valley beat Canyon.
"What this does for us is put the pressure on," Groller said. "There's definitely a lot of parity in the
league. Any team can beat any other team. And a 2-0 lead could end up in a tie."

Nipple covers, hair and other red carpet secrets

Story Highlights

Stars -- particularly female stars -- prep greatly for red carpet

Among tricks: nipple covers, hair extensions, botox

    Heavy-duty girdles also a must

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- With Hollywood's awards season under way, fans will see plenty of stunning gowns, sculpted bodies, flawless skin and camera-ready coifs on red carpets around town. What they won't see are the industrial-strength girdles, silicone nipple covers, fake hair and skin treatments beneath those flawless facades. Stylists work overtime during the six-week stretch from the Golden Globes to the Oscars, and it typically takes a team to ready stars for their stroll down the red-carpet runway. Some of Hollywood's most-coveted image experts took time out to share their best style secrets with The Associated Press. The first step? A body-enhancing airbrush tan, says spray-tanner-to-the-stars Jimmy Coco, who expects to wield his tanning wand at least 100 times before the Academy Awards. These tans do more than lend a healthy glow. They can add muscle definition where none exists, says Coco, who has worked with Eva Longoria, Jennifer Garner, Jenny McCarthy and Lara Flynn Boyle. "If they haven't quite been to the gym, I can make it look as though they have," he says. "I give them an even glow and lightly etch in where the muscle is." Next come body-shaping undergarments. Stylists swear by Spanx, a brand of bodyshapers that promise to "rescue women from love handles, waistline spillage and cellulite," according to the company's Web site. "They go from under your bustline to the top of your knee," says celebrity stylist Inge Fonteyne, who has worked with models Gisele Bundchen and Adriana Lima. "It compacts all your blemishes you want to smooth out. The key is to be seamless and bumpless." Breasts have their own set of needs. Busty beauties who want to wear backless gowns often turn to self-sticking "bras" like Frederick's of Hollywood's new Flex Body Bra, made of adhesive-backed silicone cups that fit separately over each breast. Contoured silicone pads called "cutlets" can also be slipped into a bra to give smaller busts a boost. 'It was like a science project' Less-endowed women might go braless but opt for some kind of nipple cover to maintain modesty. These days, stores sell silicone versions that are undetectable under dresses, but stylists and stars weren't always so fortunate. "We would literally put cotton balls on clients and put (tape) on top of the cotton ball," says stylist Estee Stanley, who helped develop Frederick's Flex Body Bra. "It was like a science project." Fonteyne recalls once putting tape over a model's nipples -- "definitely the most painful and crazy" trick she's used. Tape is still a critical part of a stylist's toolbox. Surgical (or even electrical) tape can be wrapped beneath

the breasts, squashing them together to create cleavage. But double-stick tape is even more popular.
Stylists use it to hold spaghetti straps in place, keep loose dresses close to the skin and prevent plunging
necklines from becoming pornographic. Before companies made special two-sided tape for fashion use,
stylists relied on a brand of toupee tape called Topstick.
Natural fabrics are easily marred by sweat, so stars plan ahead to keep palms and armpits from
perspiring.
"With a silk dress, anything you touch will make a stain," Fonteyne says. "One drop spreads like it's the
ocean under your arm."
One solution is botox, which paralyzes overactive glands to temporarily stop sweating. Another is
Drysol, a prescription treatment Fonteyne swears by that "dries up" sweat glands.
Hair clippings 'for that huge, full look'
Then there's the hair. Stars weren't born with the lush manes you see on the red carpet. It's all about
extensions, says Hollywood hairdresser Michael Shaun Corby, creative director for Alterna haircare.
"Celebrities get extensions like crazy for Oscar season because they want their hair to be thicker," he
says.
Stars who don't want to make a major commitment might opt for "hair for a day," he says: quick, clip-on
extensions that can be removed at the end of the night.
Corby even uses extra hair for updos. He wraps hair clippings in a hairnet and stuffs that inside buns and
chignons "for that huge, full look."
Corby would use ironing starch to tame hair static in a pinch before Alterna developed an antistatic hair
spray, he says.
Men have it easy on the red carpet. Their fashions aren't figure-flaunting so they can forego almost all of
the above. But they still have to look their best, so most wear makeup, Coco says. Still, male red-carpet
preparation pales compared to the Aphroditean efforts female stars make.
"They can't look that great all the time," he says. "They go the extra mile for a red-carpet event. From
the toenails to the tips of the strands of their hair, every inch of their body has had something done."
